Getting to see a doctor
We know that most patients greatly value being able to see a doctor when they need to. Others appreciate being able to get advice quickly without having to come in to the surgery.
Our experience from having to do more remote consulting during the Covid-19 pandemic is that a mixture of face to face and remote consultations allows us to handle patients' problems far more efficiently than before. We feel a continuation of these arrangements, at least in part, will allow us to give be best access to most patients.
The system involves patients phoning the surgery in the usual way (02890204218) and a message being taken for the doctor to phone you back. Please give the receptionist as much detail as you can to include in the message to the doctor. This helps us to prioritise calls.
We will phone every patient back (unless you have made a request that does not require a call back). Please be assured that, if a face to face consultation is necessary, we will see you the same day. Please note we aim to address all patient problems on the same day we hear about them. This means there will be no more waiting weeks for an appointment. The other side of this is that normally you will not be able to book advance face to face appointments. If we were to allow advance bookings to be made, this could lead to us being booked up weeks in advance again.
We know this arrangement may not be ideal for some, and we continue to explore ways of accommodating the wide variety of access arrangements people may want. We are also reviewing our telephone access to see if there are improvements we can make there.
Coronavirus Outbreak (Covid 19)
What do I do if I think I have the Coronavirus?
The first thing is not to panic. Most patients will have a mild illness and will recover within 7 – 10 days.
The usual symptoms are a raised temperature (fever) and a new dry cough. With the new variants some of the symptoms are very much like those of the common cold. Some patients may also complain of flu like symptoms such as muscle aches and pains and “chills”.
If you experience these symptoms:
You and anybody in your household should isolate yourselves in your own home (to avoid spreading the virus) for up to 10 days depending on your test results.
You do not need to contact us for advice. You will not need a Coronavirus test. Make sure your fluid intake is adequate and take paracetamol for high temperature and muscle aches and pains.
DO NOT PHONE THE PRACTICE OR THE 111 help line OR Out of Hours unless you become very unwell.
DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE COME TO THE PRACTICE.
If you are better and have not had a high temperature for 2 days you can stop self-isolation the following day.
What if I get worse?
The infection may last several days and that would be usual. If you feel that your symptoms are getting significantly worse, have lasted more than 7 days or if you are experiencing breathing problems
then phone NHS helpline 111 in the first instance
If you are having difficulty getting advice, then you can phone the practice on (028) 90204218 or Out Of Hours.

DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE COME TO THE PRACTICE
If your condition has deteriorated significantly we may advise that you go to hospital.
You will not be able to collect prescriptions or repeat prescriptions from the practice. Instead we will send (or in urgent circumstances telephone) your prescription to a local pharmacist of your choice.
We will not be issuing sick certificates ( fitness notes) related to corona virus infection and self-isolation circumstances. The Government are introducing special measures to deal with this and you should discuss with your employer.
If you require a sick certificate for an ongoing condition for which you have consulted, we may arrange to send this to you by post.
Home visits to patients will have to be significantly curtailed. All requests for house calls will be triaged first by telephone and we will only make visits when we deem these to be clinically essential.
For reasons of safety we will not carry out visits to patients with respiratory problems who may have corona virus. Instead patients who have significant respiratory problems will be referred directly to hospital.
